Endersession Day #16: June 10, 2011 Rey Roody

I didn’t have any class today and so I wanted to show my mentor some more ideas for movies, television series, short films, etc. So I began to write down ideas, and I was frustrated because recall the two different dreams I had that were really good concepts. And even as I think about them more, the more irritated I get because I get bits and pieces of them but piece part from dream 1 with dream 2 and pieces from dream 2 with dream 1. So from what I can remember from the first dream is that I think I got kidnapped or something and it was horrible because I knew I was dreaming but couldn’t get out the dream, like I couldn’t wake myself up. That’s all I could remember from the first dream, I think. But the second dream I believe was that I was playing the drums, and then all of a sudden I think I was in a room with a group of guys and we were planning to go do a drive by or go rob a place or something like that. So anyways, I wrote down as much memory as I could retain and keep them in a notebook to show my mentor and he critiques me on it, by telling me whether it’s a bit overwhelming to be a movie or if the concept I wrote down was more structured, it could be turn into a mini-series or even a television series. So basically today was just showing me how to start off a scriptwriting by having a concept—and everything that comes along with it—and one that makes sense that could also be interesting.

Endersession Day #15: June 9, 2011 Rey Roody

Today at my internship, I got a text message from my mentor saying to get ready because he was coming to pick me up. I didn’t know what he was coming for or why so early but I got up and he picked me up. He surprised me by saying that I was going to help him film some blood splatter for this new and upcoming television show. I’m not allowed nor given permission to tell or release any information about the television show. But I can tell you that I got the opportunity to make blood—by the way the blood tastes good. That may have sounded a little off or weird but it was fun to make and throw everywhere. I also got to put some input and give my opinions on some things that I thought would have a good affect. Of course, I was asked first, which was a great opportunity to have my voice heard for something so big in the media industry. Although I would love to spill it all out and tell you what else I did that day, I can’t because the director of the television show doesn’t want me to get into detail about it.

Endersession Day #14: June 8, 2011 Rey Roody

Today my mentor said that all I needed to do was to come up an idea for my music video. He also discussed the 60-second video that I have to do for Lia’s class. My mentor told me that He wouldn’t mind helping me out with the video which was greatly appreciated. We also started to discuss what was going to go down with the video. The artist that’s going to sing is recording if not today, tomorrow and that we will begin the editing process and stuff like that. Other than m\my mentor and I sitting down and discussing the music video, there wasn’t much that happened besides my college class, and me going to play the drums at my church while they practice the songs they were going to sing for Sunday.

Endersession Day #13:June 7, 2011 Rey Roody

Today I first woke up and contact my mentor to see what he wanted me to complete from home. We had discussed the plans for the day then I did my chores at home until it was time for my college class then go with my mentor and show him the result. So after talking to him on the phone and texting him, we decided that I should record myself playing on the drums of any song I wanted. I was too excited. So I quickly found a song and recorded myself and posted it on YouTube and my Facebook. After telling him about the recording I did he checked it out and told me that it was much better than he expected. So after my class, I went to my internship site and we talked with one of his colleagues about the stage play he recorded and the actors were practicing it for the live performance soon. He wanted me to make sure that if there needed to be a job done and nobody was doing it that I should go help with whatever it was that needed to be done. It was a great time at internship as everyday I go. Everyday at internship is an animated day, so far I haven’t had one boring experience while on the clock and off the clock at internship.

7. Do you have any regrets so far? What would you do differently if you could start internship over?
- One of the biggest regrets I have right now is not finding this internship earlier. If I were able to start this over, and knew about this opportunity, I would have got on it quickly. If I were to do one of a number of things differently, it would be to figure out what my project throughout internship would be. Even though ideas were flowing and proposals were written down, they weren’t ideas that could be done with some good quality in the amount of time. And because I waited for a significant amount of time, there were some ideas that couldn’t go through. Another huge regret I have is actually having regrets period. I feel like if I managed my time more sufficiently then I highly doubt I would have this many, if possible, no regrets. So if I could do something different I would manage my time better and take advantage of it.

3. You are half-way through your project. How is it going? What challenges have you faced? What have you learned? What are you doing to ensure a successful completion of your internship project.

- Being half-way through the project is a little comforting and stressful. A few challenged I have and are facing now, is college classes and other things that also have to be done along with the internship project. I’ve learned that if I were to learn from previous mistakes and not make them again, I wouldn’t have to worry about anything. But because I became a little nonchalant with some things, I’m stressing and almost struggling with making everyone that I am currently working on good quality. I have also learned that going with “as long as I turn something in then that’s better not turning anything at all” is always the best thing to go by. Because that can easily be taken out of context being misunderstood as “if I turn something in then I won’t get a 0”. That way of thinking isn’t the best way to think, especially for me. I’m going to have to get on top of things a lot harder than I am now. And even cancel some of the little extra-curricular activities I have going on. I can do it and I have to do it if I want a successful internship.

10. Describe one challenge that arose this week at your internship site (related to the work the company does). How did your mentor and their colleagues solve this problem?

- I think one of the problems they had was with the casting call. The problem was that they had plenty of people who said that they would be there to audition, but the people who said that they could be there didn’t come. And this was a challenge for them because they were expecting a lot of people to show up and audition. But I saw that my mentor and his colleagues took this well. Even though they were at the casting call waiting for people to come and audition from 8 AM to 6 PM, he and his colleagues did something else that was helpful until someone showed up. And what they did was they would tell me to get up on stage and they wanted me to do some improve, which was very exciting. So basically they solved this problem by showing me techniques of improve, the do’s and don’t for auditions, and giving me tips for monologue readings.

5. Who benefits from the qork that you do at internship? How and/or why?

- In my honest opinion I feel like everyone who contributes to what I’m doing at internship is benefitting. The vibe at my internship is the type of vibe where nobody makes anyone feel less or lower than the other person. It’s more a helping environment where people make sure the other person is doing fine or makes sure that they aren’t struggling with something. I feel like everyone also benefits because everyone is honest. They don’t hold back, but at the same time they aren’t rude and brutal about it. They make sure you know what to do so you can’t mess up. They make sure that when I present my project that it’s acceptable. They don’t want it to be where someone feels better or more important. Even the leader does the cleaning. They give off the impression that just because there is a title in front of your name doesn’t mean you can’t flaunt it and expect everything at your beck and call. So I feel that everyone benefits from the “qork” I do at internship.

6. What are you thankful for in your internship experience?

- I’m thankful for everybody that I work with at my internship. Thankful for the extra opportunities they have given me. I’m thankful for my mentor. How he has taken me on as his intern. I’m thankful for the fact that he does extra things for my project at my internship like introducing me to new people. I’m also thankful for not only him but his company and other people who volunteer to help me. I’m thankful that I was able to get this experience where I learn different things in film making. I’m thankful for lots of other things also. That he allowed me to sit and watch him do a casting call for his new and upcoming movie. I’m thankful that he let me sit with his coworkers during lunch and other times and just observe them discussing and collaborating on things that they plan to do or currently are working on doing. I’m thankful for the words of advice they give me to help me do better, and be more sufficient if I want to be in the film industry. That’s what I’m most in my internship experience so far.

4. How has or do you see your internship changing the way you consider that paths your future will take?

- It hasn’t necessarily changed my path of what I want to major in and pursue a career in or get a degree. My path toward the future is to get a degree in computer science—fixing computers, programming them, etc.—but my internship has encouraged and influenced me to have a focus on the graphics and specials effect and possibly editing field under computer science. I feel like this internship is still helping find out what I want to do after college. Also, this internship has helped me see through the outer layer, what’s being seen from the outside. I never would have guess that even before developing the visual part of a movie or film, it would be so hard to come up with a certain movie genre that would good enough to produce. It isn’t as easy as these famous actors and well-known directors make it seem. For the hard part isn’t coming up with an idea for a short film, movie, or music video; the difficult part is when you try to have some twist happen or having it shot from different perspectives of people in the movie. For example, when you have a movie with a twist, it has to make sense. At my internship it’s shown me that if you have a film or video with a crazy intense twist, it has to be able to connect with other things that happen or happened throughout the film. Foreshadowing is a huge thing to do in a film now. My mentor does things that foreshadow what he’s going to day a few days from now. He’s helped me realize that there’s something that hints at the twist, causing the audience to have an epiphany suddenly realizing what’s about to happen. And that’s when your twist comes in and what they thought doesn’t happen. The more I work at my internship, the more into it I get.

8. Have you had any epiphanies while working at your internship?

- Yes, I’ve had a few major epiphanies while I was working. One of the big I had was when I had called my mentor discussing with him about the project I’m suppose to have at the end of my senior internship. Assumingly, I thought he would give me something and I was ready for it. But he threw me off when he asked what I wanted to do. And so we brainstormed writing down ideas and concepts and different ways we could portray it if we were to display in different ways. And I know when I have a brilliant idea because I keep thinking around it and I get engaged in what’s at hand, but I get lost at words because I can’t explain what is on my mind. So we were putting ideas out there, and we kept aiming at the same thing but barely missing it. So I didn’t actually realize it until I said that I wanted something that had instruments or dance or music in it. Coming to the realization that each and every last one of my ideas had either dance, music or both involved. So we ended concluding to making a music video and possibly working on something extra. The extra one we are discussing has to do with how different cultures and societies gather for their rituals. It was both exciting and comforting because not only do I have what I’m going to do for my final product, but I also have a second idea that could also be as back up if something falls through. Even though my mentor and I are currently getting stuff straight, little epiphanies will happen here and there more and more everyday.

2. What is the biggest challenge face at your internship?

- I think thus far, the biggest challenge I’m facing right now is the final thing as a whole. My mentor always seems to have an idea that would be something spectacular. But it would be something that needs more time to have the idea come out to be something with worth to it. It’s a struggle to figure out what concept you’re going to do, or a concept/idea you want to do because ideas can free flow like a never ending water fall, but if you’re trying to do a certain type of media outlet (music video, short film, theatre play, television show, documentary, etc.) then it gets a whole lot more specific because certain types of media outlets have specific traits or things that would classify what type of media it is. So it becomes a challenge to figure out how to do the concept or idea that you want but also make it in to a short film, when it would be better to make it a television series, for example.­ A shortened description of one of my ideas for a short film was about a band who meet two girls and they end up going out with each other. The band was made up of 3 guys. There’s a third girl comes around and then all mayhem breaks loose. I don’t want to give it all away because there’s a twist to it and stuff like that. I was so pumped only to find out that there was a lot going on. I was told that it would be much better if it were a book television series or movie. Film industry can be hard and frustrating and difficult, but I’m far too attached with it to give up now. I will admit this is challenging but it’s helping me realize that I can’t waste time slacking off or messing around.

3. Describe the project you'll do at internship, including the skills and technology you need to do it and what you hope your project looks like as a final product.

- My project for internship is to create a 15-minute short movie/film. Rey, my mentor, told me that I could make it any genre, and so I’m conflicting with: Zombie, Action, or one with a twist. But so far, I’ve started typing up the script for it and so far I feel like it’s looking pretty good. I don’t want to explain the movie too much but it’s pretty simple. It’s basically the lesson to be learned is that, don’t let a once in a life time chance go by, because you’ll regret not pursuing it. I’m still a little bit shaky about it because I don’t have much confidence into it, I guess? I was thinking more along the lines of an Action/Mystery film. I’m not entirely sure what type of genre my short movie/film would go in, but it’s should work out well. This project is going to be fun because I actually get the opportunity to go through the process of making a movie starting from the screenwriting, writing the script and everything!­­ Things that I will and possibly would need are: camera/video camera, a few people maybe, etc. I’m not entirely sure about what I would need, but I know that when I show my mentor, he will fill me in on what I need and don’t need. When it’s finally done, I know it won’t be something spectacular like a Stephen Spielberg, Spike Lee, or a Night Shyamalan film but I want it to be something that is very well thought out and have people still think it’s a good movie even though it wasn’t shot with $100,000 dollars and editors, casting crew, stunt crew, etc.

7. What are you most surprised by during your first week of internship and why?

- I am most surprised by how committed the people are here, I was at the church last night and I got the chance to here their praise & worship team sing. And while I was there, I was intrigued because one of the lead singers, was only 17 and she could sing very well! It sounded like she hit one of the highest notes on the piano! Also, how even though they didn't have anything for me to do at that time, they still found a way to involve me into their singing.

5. Who is your mentor? Describe his or her life, education, career path and more.

- My mentor is Rey Roody. He is a young and aspiring film writer. He's 25 years old with 4 college degrees and 1 master's I believe. He told me little bit about himself and he said when he lived in Orlando for about 4 years, he was a cab driver. Also, that he is currently hosting auditions for his current movie. I don't want to give the name or whats it's about because I wasn't given permission to do so.

3. Describe the project you'll do at internship, including the skills and technology you need to do it and what you hope your project looks like as a final product.

- At one of my internships, I will be producing a video and having it entered in the National Pollution Prevention Week Contest. I will need to be able to use a video camera and be able to come up with a way to show my carbon footprint I believe, and do it in 60 seconds or less. Also, I’ll need to be able to know how to edit the video, with enough knowledge and skills to use programs and/or applications such as Final Cut Pro, and other video recording programs.

6. Describe the company culture at your internship, including how people interact, communicate and work together.

- At my internship, the environment is welcoming. The people there were all willing to help, they were very open and curious to here what I thought about some things. Communication is key everywhere, and I felt that the people at my internship communicate well, they don't point fingers to other people, but they have a good time at the same time.

1. What are you excited about, nervous about and wondering about?

- I’m excited to see what I’m going to come up with as a final product for this video. What I’m a little bit nervous about is making executive decision because I’m not just representing myself; I’m representing not only my school but many other people as well. But I’m enough in myself to know what to do.
